Cosmonauts Alexander Skvortsov and Oleg Skripochka will monitor the 74P’s automated docking to the Pirs docking compartment at 5:38 a.m. Back inside the orbiting lab, a ...

My NASA Friend Found a Box of Film from Apollo 15 in His Desk Drawer

I recently had the amazing opportunity to work with some very interesting historical media. A retired NASA engineer friend contacted me having found a box of photographic films in his desk drawer. Turns out the box contained two partial rolls and several cut slides of 70mm film from the 1971 Apollo 15 mission! What a find! According to my engineer friend, these are not unpublished images. They are, however, original films from the customized Hasselblad EDC (Electronic Data Cameras) medium format cameras used on the lunar surface, and include numerous images of the astronauts, the Lunar Module—the “Falcon” (LM-10)—and Lunar Rover (LRV). There are also multiple images from orbit featuring the Command Module—Endeavor (CM-112). As a photographer, I found it interesting that there is one image showing the camera mounted on a bracket on the chest of the astronaut’s space suit. The cameras were essentially point and shoot—whichever direction the astronaut was pointed, it shot. The actual composition of the film remains something of a mystery, but was reportedly a custom Ektachrome formulation that Kodak developed for the NASA missions. The 70mm sprocketed film was thinner than typical ...

KATIE HOPKINS on the Santa fat shaming incident of a young boy

I love this time of year. Lights twinkling in the darkness, Mariah Carey belting out Christmas classics in my kitchen, and now my mother-in-law is dead, peace and good will to all men. Not so much for one fat nine year old from North Carolina who paid a visit to the town Santa only to be told to lay off the burger and fries. His mother, Ashley-Mayse says she and her son, 9-year-old Anthony, were just enjoying a holiday event in town, getting in the Christmas spirit, when a Santa went rogue and fat-shamed her son. Anthony told Santa he had been jolly well behaved all year and chatted through some of the things on his wish list for Christmas. Dieting advice was not one of them. But as an honest kind of chap, renowned for calling children to account that’s exactly what this Santa dished out. The kid – let’s call him Fat Tony, is clearly twice the weight he should be and has spent the best part of 2016 sat on the couch shovelling food down his funnel. Double cheese whoppers with super sized fries maybe naughty and nice, but that is never going to impress Santa. Or the pediatrician for that matter. Secondly, Fat Tony has not been fat-shamed. This is a word made up ...

The secret of K gold jewelry and platinum jewelry metal is here!

Many people think that the white metal on the name necklaces jewelry is “white gold”. The 18K gold that is worn for a long time may have a color change, but this is not the fading that everyone understands. Since the gold is yellow, even if 25% of other metal color is added, the color of the 18K white gold cannot reach the silver white color that everyone thinks, and it will have a pale yellow color. Finally, t...

The Indispensable Man: How Giuliani Led Trump to the Brink of Impeachment

Not so long ago, it seemed to Rudolph W. Giuliani that he would be presiding over a hefty part of the world. Holding court a few nights after the 2016 election in a private cigar bar on Fifth Avenue, glass of Macallan at hand, Mr. Giuliani boasted to friends that President-elect Donald J. Trump would soon nominate him to the most prestigious of cabinet posts. It would be a sublime reward for having thrown in with Mr. Trump when the respectable Republican establishment was keeping its distance, a fresh burst of stardom in a public life that had been fading fast. Mr. Giuliani made himself indispensable to the Trump campaign by doing dirty work that no one else wanted and trudging ahead even after the candidate lashed him with humiliations. Three years on, Mr. Giuliani never got the job he believed he had coming — “a bitter disappointment,” his now-estranged wife says — but in his five decades as a public figure, he has never been more prominent in national affairs. Step by step, he has escorted President Trump to the brink of impeachment. Mr. Giuliani himself is now under criminal investigation by federal prosecutors in the very office where he enjoyed his first extended draughts ...

Once again, the SPS IPC Drives automation and motion engineering mega-show, held every November in Nuremberg,

Once again, the SPS IPC Drives automation and motion engineering mega-show, held every November in Nuremberg, Germany, proved to be a bellwether for the state of the sector – especially in Germany – and an indicator of the trends that are driving the industry. One noticeable theme was the number of collaborative efforts being set up by companies and organisations that might normally be considered rivals. Visitor and exhibitor numbers at the 2016 SPS IPC Drives show were down slightly on those for 2015. By the time the doors closed on the three-day show, 63,291 people had visited the event (down from 64,386 in 2015), while the exhibition attracted 1,605 exhibitors (compared to 1,668 the previous year). More than 500 of the exhibitors came from 44 countries outside Germany, and about a quarter of the visitors had travelled to Germany. In terms of technical trends, Industry 4.0 was still a powerful force – as it has been for several years now – while many of the exhibitors were emphasising the growing importance of the cloud. Another noticeable trend, especially in the communications sector, was the number of collaborations between companies and organisations. For example, several...

This week, the Verge reported on the massive onslaught of Amazon’s cardboard boxes at recycling facilities

This week, the Verge reported on the massive onslaught of Amazon’s cardboard boxes at recycling facilities everywhere—otherwise known as the “Amazon effect.” According to Sims Municipal Recycling, one of the country’s largest recycling facilities that accepts much of New York City’s recyclables, corrugated cardboard—the kind that makes up Amazon boxes—now represents nearly half of the local curbside recycling stream, as compared to just 15 percent in 2004. And while this uptick may not be isolated to Amazon packages alone, the retailer certainly hasn’t helped the issue with the launch of its two-day and even more recent one-day shipping guarantees for Prime customers. (Back in 2017, Amazon said it shipped more than five billion items to its Prime users, which obviously doesn’t even factor in the number of shipments to non-Prime customers.) With China’s ongoing ban on the import of our recyclable materials, the increased use of Amazon packaging puts greater pressure on American recycling facilities. More cardboard being recycled by consumers also presents enormous quality issues. (As the Verge notes, an increase of cardboard coming from consumers versus businesses is particularly...
