Lasersaur That Cuts 1/2″ Plywood And 10mm Acrylic (Pew-Pew)

Remember when building your own 3D printer was a big deal? We’re starting to think that building your own laser cutter might be the next hot topic. Boasting a 16,000 square-foot facility, the Dallas Makerspace is an impressive collaboration of local artists, engineers, makers, and thinkers. Recently they embarked on building a serious laser cutting machine. They chose to go with the an open-hardware design rather than buying an off-the-shelf unit. What they built is based on the Lasersaur plans. (Another popular open-source build is the buildlog.net unit.) They ended up with a huge 24″ by 48″ cutting bed and with a laser tube rated for 100 watts continuous output. It can cut 1/2″ plywood and 10mm acrylic with ease. The entire machine is built from 20mm Misumi aluminum t-slot extrusions, making more like a giant erector set then a commercial built machine. We hadn’t seen too many of the Lasersaur builds out in the wild, so we thought you might like to see one too. Now, before you start ordering parts to build your own, you should know that a top of the line build like this will run you about $7-10k. But by comparison if you were to go with something with the same cutting area and...

Remember, it’s better to give than to receive | Ledger Independent

As we celebrate Christmas this week, and ready ourselves for the new year, now is the ideal time to recall the adage that it is better to give than to receive. Here in Kentucky, we have truly taken that to heart. According to the federal government’s Corporation for National and Community Service, more than 978,000 Kentuckians volunteered almost 97 million hours in 2018. The economic value of that time was estimated at $2.3 billion. A separate study from a year ago said Kentucky was second-best among the states when it came to collecting and distributing food to those in need. About a decade ago, the Kentucky Philanthropy Initiative did a groundbreaking study showing how we could build on this work by diverting a small fraction of the wealth that is transferred from one generation to the next. In 2017, it updated that work and found that this transfer of wealth in Kentucky from that year to the mid-2020s was expected to reach $80 billion and $761 billion over a 50-year period. If five percent of that could be diverted into an endowment, the report said, “we would be creating the equivalent of a (Bill and Melinda) Gates Foundation focused solely on our state.” Earlier this fall, ...

NFL playoff schedule 2020: Bracket, game dates and times, TV channels

The NFL playoff schedule now is set in stone, and begins with four matchups to take you through the first weekend of 2020. The 49ers clinched a playoff spot back in Week 15, but the difference between the first and the fifth seed in the NFC came down to the regular-season finale, a “Sunday Night Football” showdown between San Francisco and the arch-rival Seattle Seahawks at CenturyLink Field. The 49ers held on for a wild 26-21 win to secure the NFC West title and the No. 1 seed, ensuring the road to the Super Bowl runs through Levi’s Stadium. And if the 49ers advance to the NFC Championship game, there is a chance linebacker Kwon Alexander can return, too. Coach Kyle Shanahan, speaking on a conference call with Bay Area reporters, expressed optimism that edge rusher Dee Ford (hamstring) and strong safety Jaquiski Tartt (ribs) will be back when the 49ers open the playoffs on Saturday, Jan. 11, at Levi’s Stadium. “I’m hopeful for it and I am optimistic about it,” Shanahan said. “You never know with how those things go, with the ribs and with the hamstring. But that was the goal. We knew there could be a slight chance this week, if we were playing this week, so g...

Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) Market Size and Key Trends in terms of volume and value 2017-2025

Photovoltaics is one of the most promising arenas among renewable energy technologies. Ensuring there are no concerns related to environmental hazards and energy shortage, photovoltaics (PV) is an ideal way of directly converting sunlight into electricity.  In building integrated photovoltaics, the photovoltaic elements have become an integral part of the building. A number of photovoltaics designers and experts in the U.S., Japan, and Europe are exploring newer ways of incorporating solar energy in buildings. In a building integrated photovoltaics systems, a photovoltaic system is built by assembling several individual collectors, known as ‘modules’, mechanically and electrically into an array. A building integrated photovoltaics system integrates these modules onto the surface of the building, such as the façade or the roof. Apart from adding architectural appeal to the building, the building integrated photovoltaics system saves considerable amount of material and electricity, simultaneously bringing down the use of fossil fuels and the consequent harmful emissions. Building integrated photvoltaics could be used in off-grid, stand-alone systems as well as with utility grids. ...

Graphene biointerfaces for optical stimulation of cells

Noninvasive stimulation of cells is crucial for the accurate examination and control of their function both at the cellular and the system levels. To address this need, we present a pioneering optical stimulation platform that does not require genetic modification of cells but instead capitalizes on unique optoelectronic properties of graphene, including its ability to efficiently convert light into electricity. We report the first studies of optical stimulation of cardiomyocytes via graphene-based biointerfaces (G-biointerfaces) in substrate-based and dispersible configurations. The efficiency of stimulation via G-biointerfaces is independent of light wavelength but can be tuned by changing the light intensity. We demonstrate that an all-optical evaluation of use-dependent drug effects in vitro can be enabled using substrate-based G-biointerfaces. Furthermore, using dispersible G-biointerfaces in vivo, we perform optical modulation of the heart activity in zebrafish embryos. Our discovery is expected to empower numerous fundamental and translational biomedical studies. Electrical signaling plays a central role in many aspects of cellular physiology, including excitability, ion ...

Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante vs Bentley Continental GT Convertible twin test

► Battle of the 12-cylinder Brit cabrios► Aston DBS vs Bentley Continetal GT► A stunning Swiss road trip The Gotthard Tunnel is the most direct route between Airolo in the far south of Switzerland and Göschenen, 13 miles north. It’s way below our feet as we watch evening traffic stream towards its southern entrance on the floor of the valley, its walls sheer mountainsides. We could hop in the Bentley Continental GT Convertible and Aston DBS Superleggera Volante, bound downhill, then sit in a straight line on the A2 north. In the dark. With lorries and fumes. The sat-nav thinks we should. Pah! One hundred years ago, when Bentley was newly established and Aston only six years old, there was no tunnel, only the Gotthard Pass, carved over the Alps by men with pick axes braving conditions that might’ve given Edmund Hillary a wobbly lip. Today it’s the longer, more perilous option, but it also happens to be a giant beanstalk of a road that stretches to the heavens and cool evening air above. Given we’re driving 12-cylinder convertibles built for grand touring and glancing back a century in the rear-view mirror, it feels appropriate to take the longer, older way back to tonight’s hotel...

Pakistan’s Pink Himalayan Salt Has Become A Matter Of National Pride : NPR

Most pink Himalayan salt comes from one source: Pakistan. And that country now would like everybody to know. You may have spotted pink salt in your supermarket. Himalayan pink salt is used to season food and is believed to have health benefits. It’s used in spa treatments. You can even buy lamps made of the stuff. Well, now the country that produces most pink salt wants to claim it as its own. NPR’s Diaa Hadid reports. HADID: That’s Shahid Iqbal, a Pakistani geologist. He says Alexander’s horses began licking the rocks. HADID: Himalayan pink salt. And folks here believe it’s been mined ever since. But it really took off a few years ago… UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #1: In today’s video, we’re going to be talking all about Himalayan pink salt. It’s really good for your body, your aches and pains, cramps. HADID: …When it found popularity as a wellness product because it contains dozens of trace minerals giving it that pink hue. But the salt’s actual origins are rarely highlighted or even mentioned. Iqbal, the geologist, says the salt overwhelmingly comes from Pakistan. And we drove there. You see red brick hills emerge from ...

Everything you need to know about 3D printing and its impact on your business

How do 3D printers work? What’s the impact on our economy? How expensive are they compared to traditional manufacturing? We take a three-dimensional look at the world of additive manufacturing. Our take on the state of 3D printing, the ways companies are using it today, and how it’s going to revolutionize the future of business. 3D printing transforms spools of plastic filament or trays of resin into physical objects. 3D printing is quite literally out of this world. NASA maintains a 3D printer on the International Space Station and astronauts can build custom tools (like this maintenance wrench) without having to fly them into space. 3D printing has been adopted by students, entrepreneurs, hobbyists, and massive factories. Because 3D printing allows for the transformation of a digital design into a tangible object, a wide array of uses have been found. Physicians can print physical models of portions of patient anatomy to better visualize procedures and demonstrate practice. Engineers in factories can create custom jigs and fixtures that both save time and reduce injury during the manufacturing process. Communities foster makerspaces that teach STEM skills and aid i...
