The Apple iPhone 11, 11 Pro & 11 Pro Max Review: Performance, Battery, & Camera Elevated

It’s been a little over a year since our review of the iPhone XS and XS Max, and it’s that time of the year to investigate Apple’s latest and greatest: the iPhone 11 family. This time around Apple was able to launch all three phones, the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max simultaneously, and we’ve gotten our hands on all of them. We’ll be running them through our extensive testing marathon, again hopefully revealing more about how Apple’s newest hardware improvements change the product experience. This year we’re not seeing major changes how Apple is slicing up their market segments among the phone models, though we are seeing bit of a name change for the new phones. The iPhone 11 is the direct successor to the iPhone XR: The new phone largely remains similar to its predecessor in terms of externals, although we’re seeing the newest internal hardware as well as adoption of two of the three new cameras in the series. The iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 11 Pro Max succeed the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. Here again, we’re not seeing too major of changes in the design, although the backs of the phones differ more significantly to the regular iPhone 11. These are also the ...

Religious liberty and the separation of church and state in the workplace: Doctors should be able to bring their religion into hospitals — Quartz

Yesterday, I stubbed my toe on an IV pole. Though not uncommon for someone working in a hospital like myself, this particular IV pole was located not in a cancer ward, but in a synagogue—the synagogue that is part of our hospital. While living in the US, I expected church to be separate from state. Most US citizens regard religious liberty as a core value guaranteed by their country’s Constitution. Although in practice that may not always be the case, conceptually, this is the American way. When I moved from Philadelphia to Tel Aviv 19 years ago, however, I realized things were different. As there is no separation of church—er, synagogue—and state in the deeply Jewish nation of Israel, I’ve since given up the inviolable principle of religious liberty. Today, I reside in a country where religion is inserted into government as well as life in general: Buses don’t run here on Saturdays because it’s the Jewish Sabbath, prime minister Netanyahu dines with president Obama exclusively at kosher restaurants, and every one of Israel’s hospitals (each an extension of the ministry of health) contains a synagogue. I was initially surprised the synagogue in my hospital was not a source of pr...

To create direct root zone irrigation, PVC pipe is inserted vertically in a pre-drilled hole from 1 to 3 feet. Water, supplied through spaghetti tubing, is connected to a pressure-compensated emitter inserted into the overhead water supply line. Pictured is Pete Jacoby’s study on an established ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ vineyard.Photo by Pete Jacoby Direct root zone irrigation — or DRZ—isn’t a new concept in horticulture. Pea tape in vegetable plantings, for example, is very common. So, when Pete Jacoby, a Professor and Plant Ecologist at Washington State University (WSU), started to look at how DRZ would work in commercial vineyards, he hoped to see how much water he could save with direct application. DRZ is exactly what it sounds like — making water available deeper into the ground with the thought that this system would use less water and help growers achieve better quality grapes. It’s good news for grape growers in areas where water availability is going to become increasingly more critical. As more and more vineyards are being planted in Washington in areas with junior water rights, water availability can become a concern, so growers need to be as efficient as possible. “If yo...

The cult French cleanser Karl Lagerfeld bathes in is coming to the UK

Beauty fans might have heard about Collosol Eau de Lait, the do-it-all cleansing milk that’s loved by the rich and famous despite its bargain price tag and no-frills façade. The face and body cleanser is also used as a skin-softening bath soak – one that Karl Lagerfeld swears by. In an interview with Elle US, the extravagant designer once said, “My bathtub is very big, so I use a full bottle of Collosol every day. The maids pour it in crystal bottles, so I don’t have the plastic out. But for one bath, it is one full bottle. I have good skin, but you have to work to keep it. You have to stay tight.” 250ml Foam Pump Pet Bottle He’s not the only high profile fan; Clémence Poésy and Vanessa Paradis too share a love of the French pharmacie staple, which is also a mainstay is many a Parisian’s routine. It’s billed as hydrating and gentle, although it does contain fragrance which, generally speaking, can trouble sensitive skin types. From February 6th Collosol will be available to buy online at thefrenchpharmacy.co and from John Bell & Croyden, London’s luxury health and wellness emporium, from £9.50 for 100ml. High speed photography is fun. Ultra high frame rate video, even more so. But since not many of us have access to $10,000 HFR cameras… we have to make do with long exposure shots a perfectly timed camera flash. You can design a system to trigger the flash at just the right millisecond — but they’re still pretty expensive typically. [Electronupdate] has a 100W LED module and penchant for Arduino Nanos — so he wondered if he could make an affordable high speed camera rig — and he did. It’s a pretty slick little setup. He has a limit switch mounted to a nail on a piece of wood — when the water balloon drops on it, it triggers the mechanical switch. The Arduino then triggers the LED flash, which is quite a large load and requires a High Side Switch to operate. A small LCD and series of buttons allow him to dial in the time offset just right in order to get some awesome photos of a water balloon exploding. With short enough pulses, there’s no need to restrict yourself to the LED’s rated current, either; it simply doesn’t have time to heat up and damage itself. I did some exploratory work for someone building ultra-high-speed flashes; we were able to overdrive high power LEDs by a fac...

In April of 2019, SAF West began offering a shuttle service using a 24′ flatbed truck for pick-up and delivery. What was initially planned to be a weekly service has been so successful that SAF’s truck is making the trip twice every week, and more often when demand warrants. Trips originate from SAF’s Redding location, which is 150 miles north of Sacramento. SAF has delivered to customers as far south as San Jose, Morgan Hill, and Stockton. SAF’s shuttle can deliver up to 10,000 lbs of aluminum sheet, extrusion, and fabricated material. Toll finishing customers who need to have their material anodized at SAF can also request pickups. SAF has always covered the freight on all sheet and extrusion orders over 100 lbs., and that is still true even if we ship the material on our truck. They will quote toll finishing customers a reasonable freight based on distance from Redding and the size of the load. The 80+ customers who have already taken advantage of this shuttle since April especially like the friendly service, 100% damage-free record so far, and quick turnaround on toll finishing orders. If you are interested in ordering from the most comprehensive inv...

LEDs are amazing things. As time marches on, they are being used in more and more

LEDs are amazing things. As time marches on, they are being used in more and more lighting applications – everything from household bulbs to automotive headlights. But the push for smaller, cheaper, and brighter LEDs seems to have hit a snag for some of the less reputable manufactures. Case in point, [bigclivedotcom] has been testing of some 100 Watt LEDs from eBay. When these LEDs work correctly, they put out a face-melting beam of light that you wouldn’t dare looking into (picture the scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark). They also have some unusual specs for an LED, like running on 30 Volts – and that’s a lot compared to the forward voltage of most LEDs at around 2.5 volts@20 mA. So what gives? Well many of these high-wattage LEDs use a string of several LEDs in series. And as [bigclivedotcom] points out, this can be a real problem when a few of the LEDs begin to fail and act more like a low value resistor than a typical LED. In the videos after the break you can see [bigclivedotcom] test the LEDs to get a better look and what’s happening and why. I have one of this 100w leds with good cooling as workbench light, I installed it more/less 1 year ago and it still works fine, for...
