Finally, Ballet Dancers Of Color Can Get Shoes That Match Their Skin

Cira Robinson recently told the New York Times about what has long been a regular ritual for her: staining ballet shoes with everything from spray paint to cheap foundation, so that they would match her black skin. “I’d go to the cheapest stores and get foundation,” she said. “Like, $2.95 cheap.” That’s because it took five tubes per week to cover every wrinkle and ribbon on the 12 to 15 pairs of shoes she’d go through as a professional dancer. This practice, known in the dancing world as “pancaking,” has long been necessary for dancers of color. Finally, though, it’s becoming a thing of the past. After literally centuries of only producing pink and beige pointe shoes that complement white dancers, several companies, including major ballet supplier Freed, have started making shoes in other shades. Finally. Making a pointe of diversity: Ballet shoes in brown and bronze shades are being made in the UK for the first time. Ballet Black, whose dancers are all of black and Asian descent, worked with shoe manufacturer Freed to create the new shoes. Scattered thunderstorms this evening becoming more widespread overnight. Low 74F. Winds SSW at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of rain 80%. Locally heavy rainfall possible. HOUSTON (AP) — Gone is the haze of cigarette, cigar and pipe smoke. Gone are the coffee, soda and pizza stains. With only a few exceptions, NASA’s Apollo-era Mission Control has been restored to the way it looked 50 years ago when two men landed on the moon. It gets the stamp of approval from retired flight director Gene Kranz, a man for whom failure — or even a minor oversight — is never an option. Seated at the console where he ruled over Apollo 11, Apollo 13 and so many other astronaut missions, Kranz pointed out that a phone was missing behind him. And he said the air vents used to be black from all the smoke, not sparkly clean like they are now. Those couple of details aside, Kranz could close, then open his eyes, and transport himself back to July 20, 1969, and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s momentous moon landing. “When I sit down h...

Gwyneth Paltrow’s outrageous 2018 Goop holiday gift guide

Shop ’til you drop (all your cash): Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle site Goop published its 2018 holiday gift guide this year Once again, Gwyneth Paltrow has released an extensive holiday gift guide that can only be described as very, very, Goop. While the 46-year-old actress certainly includes affordable ideas in her shopping guide — and even some suggestions for toys, books, accessories, and gadgets that a wide swath of the population might like — she’s also infamous for packing her lists with items that read simply as out-of-touch. This year’s guide includes some outrageously-priced presents — like trips, diamond jewels, and even a yacht — as well as some that are just plain bizarre, like gold rolling papers and a hygge swing.  The most noteworthy items in Gwynnie’s gift guide aren’t necessarily the ones with the biggest price tags — but they are ones with price tags that seem inordinately high for what’s being offered.  It’s safe to say, for instance, that few people would think $150 is a a reasonable amount to pay for a matchbox, even if it is made of pewter. There, Gwyneth and her Goop editors recommend a $7,700 Hermes surfboard...

There wasn’t a chance that Bentley was going to diffidently celebrate 100 years of existence, not

There wasn’t a chance that Bentley was going to diffidently celebrate 100 years of existence, not with the company so successful and the line-up this competitive. Here, therefore, is the third in Bentley’s trilogy of Centenary Limited Editions – the other two being the ‘Number 9′ Continental and the W.O Edition Mulsanne – christened the Number 1 Edition. All are ‘By Mulliner’ cars. Based on the new Continental GT Convertible, the Number 1 Edition “encapsulates Bentley’s remarkable spirit of achievement during the last century.” It aims to evoke the No. 1 4.5-litre Blower of Tim Birkin, the car that sent the Bentley boy around the Outer Circuit at Brooklands in 1932 at an average of 137mph. Pretty brisk now; a feat of engineering wizardry then, and a record that stood for two years. Perhaps the most tangible link between 90 year-old racing car and new luxury convertible is the wheel spinner in the dash rotating display. Not only does it look like the wheel spinners found in those Bentley icons of the 1920s and 30s, those for this No. 1 Edition have been cast from a piston off the actual car, taken during restoratio...

The 2020 BMW S1000RR is what happens when government regulations ruin what is otherwise a good

The 2020 BMW S1000RR is what happens when government regulations ruin what is otherwise a good motorcycle. If you’ve been paying attention to the S 1000 RR (Yes, that’s its technical name, with spaces between letters and numbers. I’m scrunching them all together from here on out.), you’re already aware it’s been available in Europe for some time as a 2019 model year – and the reviews are raving. But now it’s slowly trickling into US dealers as a 2020 model, and this review won’t be quite as amazing – and it’s not entirely BMW’s fault. I wasn’t sure why there was a discrepancy, but after talking with some other journos who have ridden the European version, I think I know why. More on that later. On paper at least, the 2020 BMW S1000RR has all the right upgrades a full makeover, 10 years in the making, deserves. First and foremost, the asymmetrical headlights are gone! While half the room is rejoicing (myself included), others are surely crying. Alas, time and fashion ultimately move on, and from the outset of the redesign, S1000RR global brand ambassador Nate Kern, says BMW had two goals: to make the new model at least one second faster than the old bike a...

A sparse covarying unit that describes healthy and impaired human gut microbiota development

↵† Present address: Department of Medicine, University of Virginia School of Medicine, Charlottesville, VA 22908, USA. Childhood malnutrition is accompanied by growth stunting and immaturity of the gut microbiota. Even after therapeutic intervention with standard commercial complementary foods, children may fail to thrive. Gehrig et al. and Raman et al. monitored metabolic parameters in healthy Bangladeshi children and those recovering from severe acute malnutrition. The authors investigated the interactions between therapeutic diet, microbiota development, and growth recovery. Diets were then designed using pig and mouse models to nudge the microbiota into a mature post-weaning state that might be expected to support the growth of a child. These were first tested in mice inoculated with age-characteristic gut microbiota. The designed diets entrained maturation of the children’s microbiota and put their metabolic and growth profiles on a healthier trajectory. Ecosystems such as the human gut microbiota are typically described by a “parts list” with enumeration of component members. Accordingly, the abundances of community components are commonly used as a metric for relati...

David Robinson: Tesla’s solar business takes an ugly turn

Tesla’s solar energy business is off to an ugly start to 2019, and there aren’t many hopeful signs that a turnaround is coming anytime soon. And it was a truly terrible first quarter for Tesla’s solar energy business, with installations plunging and the solar roof timetable pushed back again. Despite it all, Tesla CEO Elon Musk looked on the bright side in his comments to analysts Monday evening, saying that its traditional rooftop solar installations are poised for a second-half rebound and its long hoped-for solar roof is getting closer to hitting the market. Musk even said he liked what he saw when earlier this month he visited the Buffalo solar panel factory that will make Tesla’s innovative solar roof. “I was pretty impressed with the team and we are looking forward to scaling that up significantly through the balance of this year and next,” Musk said during a conference call with analysts Wednesday. But the numbers – and Musk’s own comments – don’t provide much reason to be optimistic, at least in the short run. For starters, Tesla’s solar energy business is just a shadow of what it was under SolarCity and when state o...
