When I went for my 37-week pregnancy checkup, my doctor informed me that I was walking myself straight over to Labor and Delivery for an induction. While I waited to be admitted, my husband ran home to walk the dog and check off items on my birthing “to do” list, which included packing my hospital suitcase. As he frantically completed these errands, my husband also found time to prepare something else for me: a Hebrew amulet with a protective prayer. Perhaps this wasn’t on your packing list, but my husband, a lawyer by day, also trained as a sofer, or Jewish ritual scribe. In his spare time he is writing a Torah. So on that November morning he just happened to have parchment, ink and quills on hand in our small Manhattan apartment. Although the word “amulet” makes me think of dragons and “Game of Thrones,” the word — both in English and Hebrew (“kamea”) — really just means a small ornament used to give protection or ward off danger. In fact, many people have amulets without really thinking about it – a chai necklace, with the Hebrew letters for the number 18, which represents “life,” is a kind of amulet; a mezuzah, which Jews are commanded to place on their doorposts, is a kind...

It’s only taken 39 years and an all-new G-Class generation to finally shed the shackles of its military-inspired past, creating a fresh-as-a-fiddle G63 worthy of the twin-turbo AMG V8 that powers it. But in refusing to turn its back on so many of the glorious character traits that defined its doppelganger grand-daddy, the new-gen G63 manages to combine striking modernity with charming antiquity. Even if it is, you’ll be waiting quite a while for one. Mercedes-Benz Australia had to push hard to secure the 100 or so G63s we’ll see each year, and they’re all spoken for until 2020! It doesn’t help that the Magna-Steyr factory that virtually hand-builds the G63 in Graz, Austria tops out at around 25,000 units per year for global consumption. And yet even the G63’s considerable entry price has proved no impediment to its sales success. There’s obvious sibling rivalry for the G63, in the form of Mercedes-AMG’s more modern GLE63 (which is about to enter an all-new generation) and larger seven-seat GLS63, though the G63’s bold, blocky appeal completely sets it apart … as does the fact it’s the only series production car with three locking differentials. You can also switch the G63 from h...

Canada’s Safest Employers awards recognize companies from all across Canada with outstanding accomplishments in promoting the health and safety of their workers. The program boasts 10 industry-specific safety awards and four special awards. Voting for the 2019 Readers’ Choice Awards opens on March 25. The deadline to cast your ballot is April 23. In 2017, there were 951 reported workplace fatalities across Canada, according to recently released statistics by the Association of Workers’ Compensation Boards of Canada (AWCBC). This figure is up from 904 in 2016 and 852 in 2015. Construction was the deadliest industry with 217 fatalities, followed by manufacturing with 160. Trades, transport and equipment operators made up the most dangerous occupation, accounting for 486 fatalities. Jackie Manuel, CEO of the Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Safety association, said that while the construction industry has been making progress in injury prevention, the number of fatalities in the industry and the country as a whole is worrisome. “We have made little progress in this area over the last two decades,” she said. “But the number that really matters is one. Every one re...

Acoustic Accordion Becomes MIDI; Oh the Complexity!

Everyone knows accordions are cool — they look fly, make neat noises, and get your romantic interests all hot and bothered. What isn’t cool is being relegated to acoustics only. How are you going to play a packed stadium or lay down a crystal clear track like that? You could go out and buy an electric accordion, but even low-end models carry a hefty price tag. But, this is Hackaday, and you know we’re going to be telling you about someone who found a better way. That better way, shown in a build by [Brendan Vavra], was to take an acoustic accordion and convert it to MIDI. The base for his build was a decent full-size acoustic accordion purchased on eBay for just $150. Overall, it was in good mechanical condition, but some of the reeds were out of tune or not working at all. Luckily, that didn’t matter, since he wouldn’t be using them anyway. Don’t be fooled in the demo video below; it sounds like he’s playing the acoustic according but notice he’s not pumping those bellows! However, the bellows isn’t useless either since it can feed data back as a MIDI input. [Brendan’s] build plan called for an Arduino Mega to be tied to a series of photo-interrupters that would detect button p...

‘I Beg You, Stop.’ Residents Protest Chicken Slaughter Over Newcastle Disease

Officials are planning to slaughter chickens in Mira Loma that a family considers pets over Newcastle disease concerns. Tony Shin reports for the NBC4 News at 5 p.m. Monday, May 13, 2019. Residents were protesting in the Inland Empire Monday over the killing of thousands of chickens that were euthanized to prevent the spread of a virus. Newcastle disease is a virus that can have devastating results on the poultry industry in California, according to the State Veterinarian of the California Department of Food and Agriculture. A family in Mira Loma was devastated after they were told by state officials that their chickens were to be destroyed Monday. A Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy had to respond to keep the peace at a protest outside the family’s home. A teacher who also is also a reserve officer brought a gun to school, which has many parents rallying to support him, while some say he shouldn’t bring it on campus. Tony Shin reports for the NBC4 News at 11 a.m. Friday, May 10, 2019. The owners said it’s not fair and that in many cases, healthy chickens are being killed off in the process. “They’re not just chickens running in the backyard....

Holy Crap, These Weird (But Shockingly Useful) Things Are On Amazon

Shopping on Amazon can be a little tricky. Sometimes you look at a product and think to yourself, “Holy moly, where has this been all my life?” Other times, your first reaction is somewhere along the lines of, “The human race is doomed — and this oven mitt shaped like a cow is just our way of pressing fast-forward.” But no matter how odd, zany, or downright weird you might find some products, it’s hard to deny that most of the weird-as-hell products on Amazon are actually genius. For example, I never thought that a blend of essential oils could help repel insects — yet there’s a pack of pouches in here that rely solely on natural ingredients to keep pesky mosquitos at bay. And don’t get me started on the hairbrush made with natural boar bristles, because I’m already about .003 seconds away from buying it. Whether you like to pick up oddball products that are natural conversation pieces, or even just enjoy discovering a bunch of quirky items that make your friends jealous, I think there’s one thing we can agree on: all of these strange finds on Amazon are actually legitimately useful. So what are you waiting for? There’s...
