Elaine Selley: ‘It was an awful, hideous journey: he was willing his death to come’ | Scotland

The widow of Richard Selley, who chose to end his life at the Dignitas clinic in Zurich, describes their last few days together As the fatal cocktail flowed through the tube, Elaine Selley asked her husband, Richard: “Are you OK? Are you feeling a bit sleepy?” She saw, she says, fear in his eyes because he was not sleepy yet. Baby Cradle Car Seat In a bland room at Dignitas, the Swiss assisted dying centre, she, Mr Selley and his brother, Peter, shared the same unspoken anxiety as the medication took effect. What if, at the end of the arduous journey to Switzerland from Scotland, and the long uncomfortable days and nights in a Zurich hotel, Mr Selley did not have the death he had spent so much time planning, the relief he had anticipated? “Richard by that stage generally appeared incredibly calm,” says Ms Selley, a former head teacher of Glenalmond… Get The International Pack for free for your first 30 days for unlimited Smartphone and Tablet access. Maricopa County officials offer info, no-cost gas-retrofit programs

Summer is (finally) done and as the cooler months approach, one county agency is working to clear the air while spreading cheer this holiday season. With the monsoon fading into the rear-view, oncoming colder weather typically hurts air quality and raises risks for some vulnerable residents — especially when smoke from wood-burning fireplaces adds to the mix. Bob Huhn, a spokesman for the Maricopa County Air Quality Department, explained that while pollution advisories are less common in the summer, cooler weather leads to greater health concerns and more frequent no-burn announcements. “We have no-burn restrictions all through the summer. However, when we have no-burn days, it’s what most people talk about. It’s mostly in the winter, because that’s when people are more likely to do wood-burning activities,” he said. This summer, pollution levels improved compared to previous seasons, according to Richard Sumner, a professional engineer and permitting division manager at MCAQD. “September was another outstanding month for PM 2.5 emissions,” Mr. Sumner stated. “For the month, the concentrations were 18% below the previous three-year average for September. On a year-to-date basis,...

Handbag designer Charlotte Jamme reveals she moved to Vietnam after suffering blood clots

Charlotte Jamme, 47, founded Mia Tui, a brand of stylish travel bags, in 2011. She lives in Milton Keynes with her husband Philippe and their two children, Amelie, 14, and Mia, 13. I’ve never been a ‘handbag girl’, though I do remember buying my first, at 14: a tan bag by Jane Shilton — it’s probably quite ugly now, but I loved it. I’d saved up all my money to buy it. It was a defining moment of feeling like a grown-up. But I never thought I’d design my own. Handbag designer Charlotte Jamme, 47, had her lightbulb moment while sharing a jacuzzi with other ex-pat mothers Everything changed in 2004, when I’d just met Philippe. I woke up one day and couldn’t breathe. He called an ambulance and I found out I had blood clots on my lungs. It was a real wake-up call. I realised life is too short not to take risks. So, when Philippe got a job in Hong Kong only four months into us dating, I went with him. We had both our daughters there, before moving to Vietnam in 2008. As a result, I was travelling a lot between Vietnam, Hong Kong and the UK. It was hard work with two small children. I had a giant Tesco bag, which I’d constantly be rooting around in — it drove me mad! Then, in 2010, I ...

Cellulite is the medical term for lumpy, dimpled flesh that appears primarily on the thighs, buttocks,

Cellulite is the medical term for lumpy, dimpled flesh that appears primarily on the thighs, buttocks, hips and stomach. Around 80 percent of women over 20-years-old will get cellulite. It happens when fat pushes through the connective tissue beneath the skin, causing a rippled appearance. Women are more prone to cellulite because of the structure of their connective tissue; men’s connective tissue forms a crisscross pattern whereas women’s appears as vertical columns and, along with having thinner skin, these columns allow more space for fat to push through to the skin’s surface. Unhealthy eating, smoking and drinking can promote cellulite, but it can also be down to factors beyond our control such as genetics or hormonal imbalances. Although there isn’t a permanent solution to banishing the orange peel effect, massagers can do wonders to improve it and there are many kinds, from electric to manual, depending on your preference and spending allowance. Cosmetic physician Sarah Tonks, who runs The Lovely Clinic in Knightsbridge, said: “Massagers will speed up the circulation which will improve the appearance of the skin. They are fine to use but watch your underwear; if the under...

TheDrive and its partners may earn a commission if you purchase a product through one of our links. Read more. Seasonal vehicles like motorcycles, ATVs, and snowmobiles often sit for extended periods of time. For the most part, there is little to worry about while they’re dormant. However, when you try to use them again, there’s a good chance the battery will be dead. A good battery tender will fill the battery and monitor its health during the offseason. Check out the best motorcycle battery maintainers for safe and sustained charging. Your regular motorcycle battery charger works the same as a phone charger. You plug in your battery, and it continually charges at the same rate until you unplug it. The problem with this way of charging a motorcycle battery is that leaving it plugged in for prolonged periods can damage the battery, waste power, and even be a fire hazard. A trickle charger was made to replace the standard style and is fairly common today. These chargers use more advanced technology to monitor the charge level and adapt to your battery’s needs. The benefit of this “plug and forget” style is that it reduces the unnecessary power waste ...

Tired Of Pink And Blue Kids Clothing, Chicago Women Launch Earth-Friendly (And Non-Gendered) Children’s Clothing Line

ALIKE is not only environmentally-friendly, but the clothes come in designs and colors meant to appeal to all kids. CHICAGO — Parents know the drill: get grilled about the sex of your child during pregnancy, and expect an onslaught of pink or blue everything at the shower depending on the answer. Though gender stereotypes are decidedly less relevant in 2019, the kids clothing world remains hyper-gendered — and local fashion designer and mom Melissa Serpico Kamhout is out to change that. Serpico Kamhout never set our to design kids clothes, but after her fraternal twins — a boy and a girl — started developing their own style and personality, the idea began to take hold. “My son loves bright colors and my daughter was starting to think that it wasn’t right for him to wear them,” Serpico Kamhout said. “They were really kind of reading into gender stereotypes from a young age.” When the family went shopping, it was difficult to find clothes they both liked that wasn’t gender specific. That’s when she realized there was a need for gender-neutral children’s wear that was also environmentally friendly.  So, Serpico Kamhout co-founded ALIKE Kids with business partner Kaitlin Meyer, and ...
