Bikes, blood and beer — all to fight breast cancer

EXETER — Two Paint Pittston Pink events on Saturday drew area residents out to enjoy a good time for a great cause. The organization’s inaugural motorcycle ride began at noon at Sabatini’s Pizza, with bikers making their way up to Tunkhannock and through the Back Mountain before coming back into the Greater Pittston area for a stop at Blue Ribbon Dairy. Bikers then were on their way to Susquehanna Brewing Co. to conclude the event with adult refreshments and snacks. Throughout the day, the brewing company was the site of a Festival of Life event, which offered the chance to “give a pint” of blood and “get a pint” to be filled with the beer of one’s choice, a blood donation opportunity celebrating the lives of Greg Policare and Brian Musto. Joe Ferack, Avoca, said he was participating in the event with a group of friends, who not only enjoyed riding through the country side on a beautiful fall day, but also raising money for cancer research. Ferack said many participants had found out about the ride at other rides for charitable causes and were committed to spending their free time “biking for a cause.” Brian Matyjevich, Pittston, riding a Kawasaki Vulcan 900, said the event was ...

Auto parts companies show off new electric technology at SEMA show in Vegas

The new 2020 Shelby GT500, at 760 horsepower, is the most powerful, street-legal Mustang Ford has ever produced. But last week, the automaker pulled the wraps off another version of the classic “pony car” that makes it look almost anemic by comparison. Not surprisingly, Ford introduced the 900 horsepower Mustang Lithium at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, the annual gathering hosted by the Specialty Equipment Market Association where performance has long been king. Everywhere you turned at the Las Vegas Convention Center last week, you would find hot rods, sports cars, drag strip racers and the parts and accessories to give them even more muscle. But what took SEMA show-goers by surprise is the fact that that the Mustang Lithium — which Ford describes as a “one-off prototype” — doesn’t have a classic V-8 engine under its hood but a twin-motor electric drive system. And it isn’t alone. Chevrolet came to SEMA with a prototype called the E-10 powered by an “eCrate” electric drive system that may soon be added to its own performance parts catalog. SEMA itself set up an exhibit showcasing the potential for electric drive technology. “T...

Council Post: How To Begin Your First Big Data Endeavor Using Data Streaming Frameworks

CEO and Founder of Qulix Systems, a software development company rendering its services globally for over 19 years. To give you a better idea about how data streaming technology is transforming manufacturing and heavy industry today, I’ll provide a few examples below. Using data streaming technology, you can stream processing technologies quickly (from milliseconds to minutes) and identify interdependencies in vast industrial and manufacturing systems. Stream processing at a medical warehouse could quickly warn an operator about a temperature rise, allowing them to react quickly and prevent costly damages. Alternately, stream processing could help detect fraudulent behavior of a hacker in an industrial database and block the attacker before it damages the system. Production line monitoring, supply chain optimization, smart grid technology — these are all data stream processing applications for manufacturing and heavy industries. That list is far from exhaustive, but the value is immense. Impressive, isn’t it? If that’s what we have today, imagine what will happen in even two years’ time. You can stay ahead of the curve today by starting small with simple big da...
